Who and where are we?
The Band is an integral part of the Sunderland Monkwearmouth Corps of The Salvation Army, located on the north east coast of England, some 280 miles north from the Capital (London) and 60 miles south of the border with Scotland.
The Monkwearmouth area of Sunderland lies on the north side of the River Wear and takes its name from the monastery at the mouth of the river (built in 674AD). Venerable Bede, historian of the early Church and writer of the earliest commentaries of the Gospel, made this one of the most important centres of Christianity and learning in the whole of Europe. There is a sense in which the members of the Band are following the best traditions of Bede - in that they, too, endeavour to interpret the Good News of the Gospel to those who listen to their music.
Where our music takes us
Since its formation in 1884 the Band has held a well deserved reputation of fine Salvation Army Service and splendid music making. Indeed, the faith that brought the Band into being has been richly sustained and expressed in the lives of a galaxy of gifted Salvationists throughout its history - a heritage which the present day members are proud to maintain.
The Band has campaigned extensively at Salvation Army Corps throughout the United Kingdom and also been involved in many National and Divisional events. On a more global front - over Easter 1997 the Band enjoyed an highly successful and memorable tour of the province of Ontario, Canada.
Although undertaking our share of ‘Army festivals, our prime ministry is in the local Corps, where music takes a prominent role in our worship, and amongst the local community. In this regard the activities of the Band have changed little over the years.
About our members
The membership is drawn from many occupations, accountants, civil servants, local government officers, company directors, a teacher, students, sales representatives, a driving instructor, a fire-fighter, a postman and others - all motivated by the Band’s motto which is:
“To serve the present age”
And for you.....
We are proud of our reputation for being able to warm peoples hearts towards the Gospel through music-making. We trust that if you have the opportunity of listening to the playing and singing of the Band, that you, too, will experience an awareness of the Divine Creator himself, through the God inspired music.
